Mader’s Understanding Anatomy and Physiology offers the perfect writing style for the one-semester course. The flow of the text is logical and accessible without being overly “chatty,” and consistently makes use of relevant examples and analogies. The level of detail presented is appropriate and not unnecessarily complex. This is the only one-semester A & P textbook that was written specifically for the one semester course!

Easy-to-Understand Art covers what’s important but leaves out unwarranted, confusing detail. Good examples of this are the homeostasis illustrations; instead of lots of various colored arrows and boxes with explanations, these simple visual examples get the message across beautifully. Another example is the stepped-out art, which shows key stages of an illustration easily identified by numbered circles. This type of explanation builds comprehension sequentially.

New “ICE Emergency” readings connect topics in the chapter to emergency situations students may very well face in health-related careers. Also new in this edition are “Begin to Think Clinically” questions which encourage students to push their recently acquired knowledge beyond the text and into real-life applications similar to those they may face in their future careers. “Content Check-Up” segments allow students to test themselves over major sections of text before reading on. This increases comprehension and aids in understanding more difficult concepts that build on previous knowledge. “What’s New,” “Medical Focus,” and the “Focus on Forensics” boxes are written to relate the very latest research in anatomy and physiology and capture the interest of the student by connecting fascinating information with important concepts in the text. Preface
With this seventh edition, I’m once again working on a project that I love, and one that seeks to continue to develop and expand upon a text by Dr. Sylvia Mader. I have been privileged and honored to be entrusted with Mader’s Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology. Sylvia and I share the same vision for the book: one that is creative, informative, accurate, and most important, relevant to today’s students. This book is designed to appeal to a wide audience, from students in pre-nursing and allied health fields, to non-science majors who want a clear and concise explanation about how their bodies work. It’s my goal to capture the reader’s interest right away, and keep that reader’s attention as he or she learns something new about how we humans work.

Mader’s Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology remains the perfect text for a one-semester course. Each chapter beings with a short introduction that seeks to immediately seize attention, and then draw the reader into a more complete exploration. For example, the introductory topic for chapter 8 on the nervous system describes the cause for “brain-freeze”, the piercing headache that everyone has likely experienced while eating something very cold. Historical anecdotes, such as the story of Henrietta Lacks, that begin chapter 4, will also intrigue the reader. Next, chapter objectives are carefully constructed to be achievable to students who have no prior training in anatomy and physiology. Each chapter is enriched with many real-world clinical applications to engage curiosity. Throughout the text, “Content Check-Ups” allow the reader to test comprehension before continuing on to a new section. “Begin Thinking Clinically” is a new feature that fosters critical thinking skills. Each “Begin Thinking Clinically” question asks the reader to conduct further investigation into the chapter’s subject matter. A great deal of thought and attention has gone into the conclusion of each chapter. Basic and applied medical terminology exercises help to build a working vocabulary, thus facilitating comprehension and increasing student confidence. Chapter summaries and study questions can be used as a checklist to ensure that important concepts are well understood. Finally, the student can “take the test,” using the Study Questions to craft a short essay, followed by Learning Objective Questions that replicate short answer quiz questions(matching, true-false, multiple choice, and the like).

My students love to talk about anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology examples they’ve seen in the media or come across on the job. The new feature, “In Case of Emergency,” is tailored for all students, but particularly those with an interest in emergency response or paramedic careers. I’ve added to the “Focus on Forensics” readings on forensic dentistry and the Innocence Project, which seeks to use DNA evidence to acquit individuals who have been wrongfully imprisoned. The “Medical Focus” and “What’s New” features have been updated to reflect advancements in technology and clinical practice. But, perhaps the most important improvement to the seventh edition is a new illustration package. The new line drawings are realistic, detailed, and colorful. You’ll find some of the best artwork in the industry in this edition of Mader’s Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology.

I have enjoyed the best job in the world—being a classroom biological sciences teacher—for over 25 years. Though it may sound like a cliché, it’s still true that students teach me something new every day. Being in the classroom helps me to develop new and better ways to describe a concept using real-world examples and analogies. I know my explanation works when a student’s puzzled expression changes to “Oh…now I get it.” It’s my goal to share with teachers and students alike some of the ideas that work for me. I know that this text will help you, the instructor, to engage and excite your students about the fascinating study of the human body.
